💡 Tuesday Tips, 03.09.2021

The global gig economy is ushering in change for a lot of industries. Some will survive and some will not. A little while back, I saw a posting on LinkedIn where a recruiter was having difficulty filling jobs that should not have been difficult to fill. I started to wonder why that would be… it seemed odd to me. But here’s the thing: people have more options now than ever before. If someone wants to freelance or work as a temp, they do not need a third-party staffing agency to do it. Sites like Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer, etc., are offering people more choices and often at better rates than third-party staffing agencies. By becoming the technical middle man, they have cut out the need for the traditional temp service.

As you know, I am not afraid of making bold predictions and IMO, I do not think firms using the carrot-and-stick style of marketing are gonna make it. They have 12 to 24 months left at best, in my estimation.

What do I mean by this? As you can probably guess, I’ll be talking in more detail on the podcast this Thursday, but suffice it to say for now that there’s an old-fashioned style of sales pitch still being used. See if you recognize some of these:

  • We don’t use job boards.
  • We only look for passive candidates.
  • We don’t engage with people slinging their resumes all over town.
  • We don’t post our search assignments online.
  • We have an exclusive pool of A+ candidates that are loyal to us.

Yeah, sure. LOL. 😴 What a marketing snooze-fest. As times change, our marketing tools and tactics must change, too. Candidates have options that did not exist 10 years ago. And if you are still marketing in 2021 the same way you did it in 2011, you got some problems. I think more companies and hiring managers are getting smart to the idea that someone who is willing to work for free and hope to get paid later may not be the best choice in the long run. An hour worked should be an hour paid, period. So if someone says they are willing to do all the heavy lifting up front and hope you’ll pay them later, what’s actually going on? How invested is anyone in the situation if no money has been exchanged?
